On January 2, 2000, the Feast of the Epiphany, St. Patrick Parish of Carlisle, became the eighth
(8th) parish in the Diocese of Harrisburg to begin Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. The Adoration
Chapel is located at 152 E. Pomfret Street, the left side of the historic Shrine Church, and is
open to anyone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament had been desired and the focus of prayer of our
parishioners for many years. The opportunity came at the end of July 1999 with the re-acquisition
of the former Convent building (152 E. Pomfret Street). On October 6, 1999 Bishop Dattilo granted
permission to rename the building Blessed Katharine Drexel Hall, and to dedicate the proposed
Adoration Chapel in honor of Mother Drexel, scheduled to be canonized a saint on October 1, 2000.
Our parish has been graced to fulfill the desire of our Holy Father Pope John Paul II, who wrote
in his encyclical letter Domincae Cenea: "May our Eucharistic adoration never cease". Pope John
Paul II began adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in a chapel in St. Peter's Basilica on December
2, 1981 and he has urged all parishes to begin Eucharistic Adoration.
- Here at St. Patrick parish, Perpetual Adoration is held in the Chapel of the Blessed Katharine
Drexel Hall building, 24 hours a day, seven days a week except on Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. to allow for Mass attendance. A weekday Mass is celebrated in the Chapel on the
3rd Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon.
- The front door of the building is secured during the night hours from 9:00
p.m. till 7:00 a.m.
with a "number pad" system. The code number can be obtained by contacting the
rectory at 243-4411.
- Anyone can become a "scheduled" adorer, which means you have a specific hour to come in each week,
or a "substitute" - someone who can fill in for a scheduled adorer when they are away.
The contact persons are Jim and Lana Sollars at 241-2884.
